Victoria
There are many reasons to Visit Victoria. Australia’s smallest mainland state is located in its south-eastern corner with a population of 4.6 million and total area of 228 000 sq km. Victoria is a hugely diverse state of magnificent national parks, scenic landscapes, rugged mountain ranges and almost 2 000 km of coastline. Melbourne, Victoria’s capital was also the first permanent colony established in 1835 with the colony of Victoria created in 1851. Named after the Queen of England and the township after her prime minister, Lord Melbourne. It is Australia’s second largest city and known as the cultural, fashion and food capital. The state’s south boasts the magnificent Great Ocean Road, Mornington Peninsula, Wilsons Promontory and delightful penguin-inhabited Phillip Island. Early gold discoveries helped boost the state’s economy enormously with main centres of Bendigo and Ballarat located west of Melbourne. Further west and north-west are the rugged ancient Grampian mountains and outback mallee country. Alpine High Country famous for its excellent winter skiing and bushwalking is found in the state’s north-east. Victoria’s major industries are manufacturing, agriculture, retail trade and property & business services. Victoria’s floral emblem is the Common Heath.
